Summary: Maintenance slipup caused a 5-minute power outage, but effects on users continued for hours

During Scheduled maintenance on the power distribution units (PDUs) in their data center, Rackspace encountered an electrical short causing 5 minutes of down time without power. The outage of their services however lasted much longer for many of their customers; effecting both Rackspace cloud sites and their Slicehost virtual servers. The outage was the third outage in two months, costing the company over $2.5 million in service credits.
